I came across this model recently, and it reminded me of an HR consultant I once worked with who helped me understand that it doesn’t matter how much an employee is an excellent fit for your culture; they have to be a fit for their role. An example was an individual who worked with us in a leadership role who had excellent soft skills that you like to see in a leader. He had the proper education, technical training, years of work experience, and a fantastic attitude, yet he did not thrive as a leader. Did we set him up for success by putting him in that role? I don’t think we did. I learned the importance of coaching those who aspire to be leaders because it will help them determine if they are on the right career path. Giving employees opportunities to lead projects and coaching them through the process is a great way to determine whether or not they should move into a more permanent leadership role.
